The ‘Comfort Blanket’ in Your Wardrobe: Why Every Outfit Needs One

Just like a child clings to their favorite security blanket for comfort and reassurance, we all have that one piece of clothing that makes us feel safe, confident, and at ease. It’s the item we reach for again and again—the one we trust to look good, feel good, and give us that extra boost of confidence no matter the day.
For me, right now, it’s high-waisted straight or wide-leg jeans and trousers. Why? Because they check every box:
✔️ Comfortable when sitting—no digging into my stomach
✔️ Flattering in all the right places—especially as my body changes over time
✔️ Gives me confidence—I don’t mind people looking at me because I feel good in them.
And that’s the key. The ‘comfort blanket’ piece in your wardrobe isn’t just about style—it’s about feeling like the best version of yourself.
Why Finding Your Comfort Piece is Essential
Our bodies change. What once felt amazing may no longer fit quite the same way. That slinky dress that made you feel like a goddess at 25? Maybe now it doesn’t sit quite right, and instead of confidence, it brings self-consciousness. And that’s okay. Style is fluid, and your wardrobe should evolve with you.
When you know what works for you right now, shopping becomes easier, or like I always say: When you know yourself, the right clothes will find you! No more impulse buys of things that look amazing on someone else but don’t make you feel like you. If you find that magic piece? Buy repeats. Secure the comfort. There’s nothing wrong with sticking to what works.
Everyone’s Comfort Blanket Is Different
For some, it’s a black top—the perfect solution for feeling polished, especially if you have a larger bust and want to balance proportions. For others, it might be structured blazers because they create a put-together look without much effort. Maybe it’s maxi dresses because they flow beautifully and don’t require much styling. Or perhaps it’s a specific shoe style because they support your feet while looking elegant.
There’s no right or wrong comfort piece—it’s about what makes you feel like yourself.
What’s NOT a Comfort Blanket?
The items that look stunning in a store but don’t live well in your wardrobe.
For example, I love the idea of silky skirts—they look gorgeous in ads, on mannequins, and styled on others. But in reality? If it’s not dark-colored, I feel exposed. I have to think about the right underwear. I don’t feel free to move the way I want. Instead of confidence, it brings worry.
A true comfort piece should never make you second-guess yourself.
How to Find Your Comfort Piece
If you’re unsure what your comfort blanket item is, ask yourself:
What do I instinctively reach for on days when I want to feel my best?
Which outfit makes me forget about adjusting, tugging, or second-guessing?
Is there a color, fabric, or shape that always makes me feel put together?
Once you know it—embrace it. Wear it proudly. Buy it in different colors. Build your wardrobe around it.
Great style isn’t about constantly reinventing yourself—it’s about wearing what makes you feel amazing.
