THE NEW (Practical) BODY SHAPE DRESSING RULES

We women have been categorised for years by our bodies. Or body shapes.
Forget apples, pears, and hourglasses right now.
I have come to realise with my own body, there are even better rules to follow when dressing!
And it's so obvious yet so hidden is shocking!
These are the real, modern body shape rules. Categorised by the state of being, and what that means for how I want to dress.
It's empowering, flexible and actually useful.
They are based on how we actually feel and how our bodies naturally fluctuate through the month. Instead of trying to force your body into a static category, I want you to dress for your mood, energy, and confidence levels. Here's what they look like:
1- I AM ON FIRE SHAPE
DEFINED, CONFIDENT, DRESSED TO BE SEEN.
This is the golden shape. I’m in sync with myself. I fancy working out, I reach for an avocado and boiled egg instead of croissants, because I actually want to. I drink green tea and feel light and clear-headed. I feel strong, focused, and in control—even my tummy feels flatter.
Everything just clicks. I feel like myself —focused, creative, energised. I reach for my trainers without even thinking about it. My meals feel nourishing, not heavy. My digestion feels light, my mind is clear, and even my tummy feels like it’s playing along.
CLOTHES-WISE:
I’m reaching for the jeans, tucking things in, maybe even adding a belt. I don’t mind drawing attention to my middle because I feel confident, strong, and sharp. It’s not just about the flatness of my tummy—it’s the clarity I feel.
This is the "shape" I wear the outfits I secretly love but don’t always feel up for. I dress like I mean business, but with ease.
SHOPPING-WISE.
This is the best time to try on fitted pieces—denim, tailoring, swimsuits, anything with structure. I trust my gut and my reflection more. I take fashion risks here, so I go for pieces I want to build my wardrobe around.
2- I REACH FOR THE CAKE 🍰 SHAPE.
SOFT, LOW-KEY, ATTENTION IS REDIRECTED TO WHERE I FEEL GOOD.
Also known as "Everything Feels Wrong” Phase.
This is the drop. I feel bloated, heavy, sluggish. I've been eating out, skipping workouts, and nothing in my wardrobe feels right. My energy is low, and my cravings are high—and I knew it was coming.
The "non-perfect" shape of the month that I have to come to accept.
CLOTHES-WISE:
Easy, loose dresses that don’t cling
Focus shifts to areas that feel more “me” right now—like my arms, legs, or neckline
Accessories are key: a bold necklace, bright lipstick, polished earrings
Reaching for black, yet I style it—layered textures, good shoes, and something chic.
SHOPPING-WISE
Step away from the shops. Seriously. You’ll second-guess everything. If anything, save ideas to revisit later or buy that oversized cardigan you keep wishing you had. Otherwise, skip shopping. Treat yourself to skincare or a good nap instead.
3- THE "MEH DAYS” SHAPE
MINIMAL EFFORT, RESTFUL, CALMING PIECES.
Also known as recovery shape.
I’m not particularly bloated, but I’m not peaking either. My mood is somewhere in between. I go for my ‘easy wins’—pieces I know work without effort.
I still need comfort, but ready for a hint of shape, lightness, or polish.
Maybe I’ve been sick, overworked, or overstimulated. Maybe I just need a break from trying. My body needs rest, and my brain needs simplicity. I am slowly getting back to the I am on fire phase.
CLOTHES-WISE:
I know my shapes.
I know my pieces that work easily.
Wide leg trousers
A loose shirt...
SHOPPING -WISE
This is the perfect time to look at your wardrobe gaps and practical needs—good layering pieces, sneakers. No dramatic buys, just thoughtful additions that make everything else easier.
