REDEFINING VALUE: HOW TO SHOP FOR SUCCESS.

Writer: raquelraquel

As a style consultant, I’ve witnessed clients hesitate at the idea of paying full price for an item they truly love instead of scouring sales racks or second-hand options. While these methods can sometimes result in found treasures, they often leave us questioning even more about our wardrobes and, honestly, our style too. And here is why:

How Sales Impact Our Relationship with Clothes

Purchasing something from a sales rack often creates a different emotional connection with the item. If we don’t pay much for something, we may not value it as highly. It’s easy to dismiss a £10 top as disposable, but when you invest in a well-made £70 blouse that aligns with your style, you treat it with care, wear it more often, and cherish how it makes you feel.

Constantly shopping sales can also reinforce a mindset that we’re only worthy of “bargains.” This mindset may seem harmless at first but can grow into a pattern of settling—settling for less than what we truly desire, for items that don’t quite fit, or for colours that don’t spark joy. Over time, this can subtly erode our sense of self-worth.

I’ve been there myself, circling the sales racks and convincing myself I was saving money. But over time, I noticed that those “bargains” rarely brought me joy. Instead, they contributed to a wardrobe that felt meaningless—full of clothes that didn’t truly represent me and often ended up unworn. I’ve seen other women go through the same cycle, filling their wardrobes with impulse purchases that don’t improve their style or confidence.

This approach not only leaves us dissatisfied but also leads to waste, both in our wardrobes and in the environment, ( and your wallet!)

Breaking this cycle starts with a shift in how we value our purchases and, ultimately, ourselves.

Invest, in your own way.

When you choose to spend thoughtfully on pieces that fit you well, complement your style, and align with your values, you’re making a personal decision about what holds value in your life. It’s not about the price tag, but about finding items that resonate with you and enhance your wardrobe in a meaningful way.

While I believe in the power of investing in high-quality pieces, I have realised from my experience that not every high-quality piece will align with your style and persona. So you will know what aligns with you. It's about levelling up to the next level you feel comfortable in, whether that is style, being more modern, wearing more colours, or buying a high-quality piece. You will send a powerful message to yourself:

“I am worth it.”

Investing in something that fits you perfectly, complements your style, and aligns with your values allows you to appreciate your wardrobe—and yourself—more meaningfully.

The Illusion of “Savings”

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking sales save money, but let’s reframe that narrative. Buying a discounted item you don’t truly love or need isn’t saving; it’s spending unnecessarily. Those “savings” add up to a wardrobe full of items that don’t serve you, leaving you with less money to invest in pieces that truly matter.

Instead, consider the cost-per-wear of an item. A £200 coat worn 50 times over several seasons costs you £4 per wear, while a £40 sale item worn twice costs £20 per wear. By this logic, investing in quality pieces you love often makes better financial sense in the long run.

Shifting the Mindset

To break free from the sales rack cycle, start by redefining how you shop:

  1. Prioritize Quality Over Quantity:

Aim to curate a wardrobe of long-lasting pieces that work together, rather than chasing trends or bargains.

  2. Assess True Value: Before buying, ask yourself: “Would I pay full price for this? Does this piece align with my style and lifestyle?”

  3. Embrace Mindful Shopping: Focus on intentional purchases that spark joy and reflect your authentic self.

  4. Reframe “Sales”: Recognize that sales aren’t about you saving money but about retailers maximising their profits. Shift your focus to investing in yourself and your long-term style.

I get it, so other women like you.

Believe me, I get it—stepping away from the allure of discounts is no easy feat. It takes practice, patience, and a bit of willpower to walk past that tempting “70% off” sign. But when you start to see the difference it makes in your wardrobe (and your confidence), you’ll realise it’s worth every effort—and hey, you might even have a little fun along the way!

  • Do I need to be actively involved in the process once I purchase the Style Breakthrough service?
Yes. This service is designed for individuals who are truly ready to commit to discovering their authentic style and breaking free from impulsive, unfulfilling purchases. We work with clients who are at a stage in their lives where they want a more intentional and sustainable approach to their wardrobe. By trusting the process and fully engaging in it, you’ll achieve lasting results—a style that feels effortless, cohesive, and truly you.
  • Will I have to get rid of all my clothes?
Not at all! The goal is to work with what you already have and refine your wardrobe, not to start from scratch. We’ll assess what truly aligns with your style, what can be repurposed, and what might not be serving you anymore. The process is about intention—curating a wardrobe that supports your style, not just replacing everything for the sake of it.
  • Will the Style Breakthrough service change me into someone I’m not?
Absolutely not! This service isn’t about forcing you into a specific style or making you dress in a way that doesn’t feel like you. Instead, it’s about uncovering and refining the style that already aligns with who you are at this stage of your life. Think of it as a process of self-discovery—one that empowers you to feel more confident, authentic, and in control of your wardrobe. You won’t be told what to wear; rather, you’ll gain clarity on what truly resonates with you, so getting dressed feels effortless and right for you. This is about embracing your style, not changing it into something it’s not.
  • Do I need to be passionate about fashion to benefit from the Style Breakthrough service?
Not at all! The Style Breakthrough is for anyone who wants to feel confident and authentic in what they wear—whether or not they follow fashion trends. However, this service is about more than just clothes; it’s about shifting your mindset around style and shopping. To truly benefit, you need to be open to change. If you’re ready to break free from old shopping habits, stop wasting money on pieces that don’t work, and build a wardrobe that reflects who you are, this process will give you clarity and confidence. But this may not be the right fit if you’re looking for a quick fix without a commitment to real change. Style isn’t about following rules—it’s about redefining your relationship with your wardrobe and embracing a new way of dressing that truly serves you.
  • Is the Style Breakthrough service only for people who feel lost in their style?
Not at all! While the service is perfect for those who feel disconnected from their wardrobe, it’s also designed for anyone who wants to refine, refresh, or evolve their personal style. It’s about making style effortless, authentic, and aligned with who you are—wherever you are on your style journey.
  • Why should I book the Style Simplified session instead of jumping straight into a full service?

Yes! If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your closet, the Style Simplified session is a great way to gain clarity. This session helps you break down your wardrobe in a calm, guided way so you can understand what’s truly working and what needs to go. We’ll focus on simplifying your approach to style, making the whole process less stressful and more aligned with what actually feels good for you. By the end of the session, you’ll feel more confident and in control, with a clearer understanding of how to move forward without feeling bogged down by unnecessary items or decisions. • What if I don’t like the style you suggest for me?
There’s no one-size-fits-all “look” that I impose on clients. This process is collaborative, and everything is built around your personality, preferences, and lifestyle. You’ll be involved every step of the way, ensuring that your final style direction feels natural and authentic to you. My role is to guide, refine, and bring clarity—not to dictate or change who you are.
  • What is a Wardrobe Audit?
A Wardrobe Audit is a deep assessment of your current wardrobe to ensure it aligns with your personal style, offers versatility, and works cohesively as a whole. This process isn’t about discarding everything you own—it’s about understanding what serves you, what doesn’t, and how to create a more intentional, well-balanced collection of pieces that truly reflect who you are. Using a structured methodology, we evaluate your wardrobe for consistency in style, cohesiveness, variation, and balance—even if those terms don’t mean much to you yet, don’t worry! The process is designed to give you clarity on what works, what’s missing, and how to make getting dressed effortless. By the end of the audit, you’ll gain a clearer sense of direction, ensuring every piece in your wardrobe contributes to a style that feels natural and empowering. If you’re tired of feeling like your closet is full of clothes but nothing quite works together, this is the step that will change that.
