As you may know by now, I am not a huge advocate of rigidly sticking to having your colours “done”—those that supposedly suit you and should be the only ones you wear. Sure, they can serve as a helpful guide, and that’s why in the MasterClass on colour combinations, I always include one slide about understanding your colours. However, I clarify that this is not the sole focus of how I work.
Yes, a colour palette is involved, but it’s one that you genuinely like—one that is versatile and aligns with your mood, personality, and unique vibe.
COMMON SCENARIO:
Here’s a common scenario I’ve encountered: I work with a woman who previously had her colours “done.” At first, she gets excited about it and invests in clothes from specific brands recommended to her, brands that offer pieces in “her colours.” But then the reality hits.
Since most of us shop from high-street stores, it becomes tricky when seasonal trends introduce colours that don’t fit “your palette.” Suddenly, you might feel like there’s nothing out there to buy that excites you. Where have “your colours” gone?
Are you supposed to change your palette every season? How do you adapt what you already have to this season’s colours?
In many wardrobes I’ve seen, this rigid adherence to a specific palette often leads to prioritizing colour over personal style, which should never be the case. The result? Wardrobes filled with pieces that don’t truly feel like you. This often leads to frustration, a lack of confidence in what to wear, and ultimately, wasted clothes that don’t get worn or end up being discarded.
To help you navigate this, here are five ways to approach seasonal colours when they aren’t part of your palette.
ADAPTING AND EVOLVING
1- Embrace the Season, Not the Frustration
Start by acknowledging that seasonal colours don’t always suit everyone’s natural palette. While it can be frustrating to see a trending colour that doesn’t work for you, I assure you that you can still enjoy the season's spirit by adapting trends thoughtfully.
2- Highlight Seasonal Colors in Small Accents
Use trending colours in smaller doses, like accessories or jewellery, rather than major wardrobe pieces. For instance:
Scarves, hats, or belts in the season’s colours can add a trendy touch without overpowering their natural palette.

3- Remember, there are always trending neutrals.
We tend to focus on the colourful, but remember every season there are also about five or six neutrals that go with the colourful ranges.
The trending neutrals will likely find a good pair in your colourful wardrobe.

4- Ground the Trend
Layer trending colours over your existing neutrals. By grounding the trend colour in a solid, reliable neutral, you can create a balanced, sophisticated look that feels current without fully committing to colour outside your palette.

5- Keep the Trend Below the Belt
When it comes to colours that don’t suit your palette, placing them on the bottom half of your outfit is a clever way to incorporate trends while maintaining a harmonious look.
Pair your trendy bottom pieces with tops in shades that flatter your skin tone. For example:
If your palette leans cool, you can pair blues (from your palette) with a cool shade of grey in the seasonal shades, navy and brown are also a good combination.
If your palette leans warm, try wearing rain forest colour tops with trendy bottoms like sunburn or camel, which never goes out of style.

6- Celebrate Your Style, First
If by the time you had your colours done, you focused on your style first, you already had a huge advantage. Clean lines, structure pieces, whatever your fit and style is, if you followed that at the time, and then you found the right piece in a colourful shade, it is very likely it still feels modern, since it is clean style.
When having your colours done, especially if they are bright colours, it’s best to keep them in timeless styles so when it comes to changes in seasonal colours, you won’t feel like you have to change your entire wardrobe, since those pieces are classic and they will always feel like YOU.
Style is personal, and adapting trends should be fun, not frustrating. Stay focused on what makes you feel authentic and confident. After all, style is about expression, and trends are just tools to explore it.
You don’t have to abandon your style goals to feel modern and on-trend.
